Contextual error
A sentence with underlined words; one contradicts the overall meaning. The error is in meaning, not spelling or grammar.
A sentence with underlined words; one contradicts the overall meaning. The error is in meaning, not spelling or grammar.
Method
- Read the sentence and find its main idea.
- For each underlined word ask: does it support the idea or fight it?
- Flip the suspect word to its opposite; if the sentence now works, that is the error.
Contextual-error patterns
The opposite word
The most common pattern: a word replaced by its opposite.
A wrong scientific fact
The sentence breaks a known fact.
A cause that does not fit its result
Watch “because/so”: is the cause logical for the result?
A twisted saying
A famous saying with one word changed.
- The “flip and read” rule: flip each underlined word to its opposite and reread; the one whose flip fixes the sentence is the error.
- Don’t choose a word because it is hard or rare; look for the contradiction.
The wrong word is usually a quality that means the opposite: “the soldier is cowardly; he charged the lines”. Swap in its opposite; if the sentence now makes sense, that is your answer.
